N.Y. Investigates Claims That Legislator Misused Bronx Charity

New York state and city authorities are examining a state lawmaker’s ties to a nonprofit group formerly led by her ex-boyfriend, who claims she raided the charity’s funds for personal and campaign expenses, according to the New York Post.

A source in Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office and a spokesman for the Bronx district attorney told the newspaper their offices are investigating allegations that Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera misused taxpayer funds she steered to the Bronx Council for Economic Development.

The Post had previously reported on claims by Ms. Rivera’s former boyfriend, Vincent Pinela, that she installed him as the nonprofit group’s $75,000-a-year head after they started dating in 2006 and routinely charged personal and political expenses to the charity.

Ms. Rivera has said Mr. Pinela’s accusations are “simply untrue.”
