N.Y. Judge Orders Solicitor for Sham Charity to Pay $3.1-Million

A for-profit fundraising company that secured millions of dollars for a now-shuttered Long Island cancer charity has been ordered by a New York judge to pay $3.1-million in restitution, Newsday reports.
The funds from Campaign Center Inc. of Lindenhurst, N.Y., which was itself shut down by court order last month, will benefit legitimate cancer organizations through a fund set up by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office.
Campaign Center had been charged with violating state laws in its solicitations for the Coalition Against Breast Cancer. The attorney general reached a settlement earlier this year of a 2011 lawsuit against the charity and its leaders, whom the state said spent nearly all donation revenue on personal expenses and fees for the fundraising firm.
