N.Y. State Schools Seeks Private Funds to Use $700-Million Federal Grant

New York State’s Education Department hopes to raise $18-million from foundations and private donors, which officials say they need to make sure the state spends its $700-million Race to the Top grant effectively, says The Wall Street Journal.
The money will pay 13 fellowships for experts in curriculum, testing, and teacher evaluation and for systems, technology, and research related to using the of the Race to the Top money, awarded by the Obama administration as part of a nationwide competition to encourage states to adopt certain school-improvement efforts.
“We need really superb expertise to make sure that the reforms are extremely well crafted and pragmatic at a time when we’re facing cuts in public funding,” said David Steiner, the state’s education commissioner.
