N.Y. to Retry Ex-Senator and Son on Nonprofit Theft Charges

Federal prosecutors said Tuesday that they intend to retry former New York State Senator Pedro Espada Jr. and his son, Pedro G. Espada, on charges of embezzling money from a nonprofit Bronx clinic network, says Bloomberg.
The elder Mr. Espada was convicted last month on four counts of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the nonprofit Soundview Healthcare Center, which he has led since its founding in 1978. But a jury deadlocked on four additional counts of theft, fraud, and conspiracy against the ex-state Senate majority leader and on all charges against his son.
“The government is going forward on all counts,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Carolyn Pokorny told U.S. District Judge Frederic Block in a Brooklyn Tuesday.
