Obituary: David Kuo, Leader Then Critic of Bush Faith Office, Dies at 44

David Kuo, an evangelical Christian and author who helped implement President George W. Bush’s effort to enlist religious charities to provide federally funded social services, died of brain cancer Friday at age 44, writes The Washington Post.

Mr. Kuo served in the Bush administration from 2001 to 2003 and was deputy director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, which President Bush created with his first executive order.

After leaving the White House Mr. Kuo became a prominent critic of the program, saying the administration had fallen far short of supplying the promised $8-billion and undermined then-candidate Bush’s promise of a “compassionate conservatism” that would help the nation’s poor.
