Obituary: John C. Haas, 92, Leading Philadelphia Philanthropist

John C. Haas, a Philadelphia executive who gave away more than $1.2-billion after selling his family’s venerable chemical business in 2009, died Saturday at age 92, the Philadelphia Business Journal reports.
In December 2009, eight months after Rohm and Haas Company was sold to Dow Chemical for $18.8-billion, Mr. Haas restructured his family’s trusts to give $747-million to the William Penn Foundation, which his parents founded and he chaired for more than 30 years. The gift was the biggest of 2009.
At the same time the family donated $502-million to establish a new charitable organization, the Wyncote Foundation. Mr. Haas and his wife, Chara, also founded the Stoneleigh Foundation to promote advances in education, child welfare, and juvenile justice.
