Obituary: Richard W. Lyman Led Stanford and Rockefeller

Richard W. Lyman, who served eight years as president of the Rockefeller Foundation after a tumultuous tenure leading Stanford University, died Sunday at the age of 88 at his California home, writes The New York Times.
An academic historian, Mr. Lyman served as Stanford’s vice president and provost from 1967 to 1970 and its president through the following decade. During his tenure, he tussled with student and faculty groups over anti-war and free-speech issues, presided over a $300-million fundraising campaign, and dropped the school’s American Indian mascot.
Mr. Lyman left Stanford in 1980 to become Rockefeller’s president. He returned to Stanford in 1988 as director of what is now the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.
