Oklahoma Charity Accused of Improper Politicking

A watchdog group is asking the Internal Revenue Service to investigate a nonprofit Christian organization for promoting an Oklahoma congressional candidate, reports The Oklahoman.

The nonprofit organization Reclaiming Oklahoma for Christ last month sent e-mail messages urging people to attend a campaign rally for Rep. Sally Kern, a Republican.

The Rev. Paul Blair, the nonprofit group’s founder, was among those who rallied to Ms. Kern’s defense in 2008 after she told a Republicatn party gathering in Oklahoma City that homosexuality is “the biggest threat our nation has.”

In a letter to the Internal Revenue Service, Americans United for Separation of Church and State argued the e-mail missive constituted improper partisan politicking by a tax-exempt entity.

Mr. Blair said his organization has done nothing illegal and that Americans United was trying “to intimidate pastors and churches into silence.”
