Omaha, Neb., Educational Nonprofit Revises Mission

Building Bright Futures, an educational nonprofit started six years ago that has spent around $50-million on programs to help children in the Omaha metropolitan area graduate from high school, is overhauling its mission, the Omaha World-Herald writes.
The group’s board of directors has chosen to eliminate efforts to influence public policy and instead narrow the organization’s focus to three areas: dealing with the shortage of early-childhood teachers; deciphering educational data; and helping prepare principals to work at schools in poor neighborhoods.
Ken Bird, interim chief executive, said the organization spends $7-million a year, most of which comes from local philanthropists and some from federal grants.
