Oprah Makes $12-Million Gift to African-American Museum
June 12, 2013
Oprah Winfrey is donating $12-million to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, says The Washington Post.
Along with the $1-million she gave in 2007, that is the largest gift for the project, and the museum’s 350-seat theater will bear her name.
Half of the $500-million cost for the museum’s design, construction, and exhibits comes from Congressional support. The museum is still in the process of raising the last $250-million.
Ground was broken in February 2012. The museum will sit on five acres next to the Washington Monument.
