Oxfam Report Blasts Haiti Recovery Effort

Reconstruction work in Haiti is stuck in a “quagmire” of indecision and delay, a leading global aid charity asserts in a report on the state of relief efforts one year after the country’s devastating earthquake, according to Reuters.

Aid efforts have been paralyzed by a lack of leadership from both the Haitian government and the international community, Oxfam contends in a study issued Wednesday. The Britain-based charity said little has been done to clear rubble from the earthquake, erect temporary housing, or build water and sanitation facilities.

Oxfam cited money issues, noting that less than half of the $2.1-billion pledged for Haiti’s reconstruction at a donor conference in March has been disbursed, but also said the reconstruction commission led by Bill Clinton and Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive has been plagued by poor planning and contradictory policies.
