PBS Head Defends George Shultz Documentary Amid Questions About Donors

Paula Kerger, the head of PBS, is defending the nonprofit broadcaster’s airing last month of a three-hour documentary on George P. Shultz whose sponsors included several business and political associates of the Reagan-era Secretary of State, The Washington Post reports.

“If you look at the full funding list there was not any single entity that directed the documentary,” Ms. Kerger told a gathering of television critics in Beverly Hills.

Turmoil and Triumph was produced for PBS by Free to Choose Media, a nonprofit production company with funds from the Stephen Bechtel Fund, an affiliate of a company Mr. Shultz once led; Charles Schwab, whose investment firm Mr. Shultz served on as a board member; and the financier Peter G. Peterson, a Cabinet colleague of Mr. Shultz in the Nixon administration.
