Penn State Agrees to Pay $60-Million to Sandusky Victims

Penn State University announced Monday that it has reached settlements totaling $59.7-million with 26 people who say they were sexually abused by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.

The agreements come nearly two years after the scandal erupted over Mr. Sandusky’s molestation of boys while working at Penn State and The Second Mile, a youth charity he founded that used university facilities. The 69-year-old ex-coach was convicted in June 2012 of abusing 10 boys and is serving a prison term of 30 to 60 years.

Penn State trustees tentatively approved settlements with a group of victims in July, but the university said at the time that it would not disclose details until the agreements were final. The university said Monday that the payments cover 26 abuse claimants and will not be made out of tuition, donations, or taxpayer funds. Liability insurance is expected to cover the settlements.
