Pittsburgh Tuition-Tax Vote Put Off Again

The Pittsburgh City Council again postponed a vote on a proposed 1 percent tuition tax at the request of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, who cited progress in talks with the city’s nonprofit groups over payments for municipal services, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

A vote on the levy — which city officials say is needed to help close a budget gap but which is vehemently opposed by local universities — was rescheduled for Monday. In a letter to council members, Mr. Ravenstahl said he hopes to reach an agreement with major tax-exempt organizations on a payment scheme “before the end of the year.”
