Pope Redirects Vatican Bonuses to Charity

Citing hard times at the Vatican and around the globe, Pope Francis has scrapped plans to give employees bonuses and ordered that the money instead go to charity, reports UPI.
Traditionally, Vatican employees have received bonuses whenever a new pontiff is installed. When Pope John Paul II died in 2005, about 4,000 employees got bonuses of $1,300. When Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected as his successor, they got $650 more, says UPI, citing Religion News Service, bringing the total to $7.8 million.
The Holy See reported a deficit of $19-million in 2011.
