The nonprofit journalism organization ProPublica paid more than $2-million in wages to its top eight executives, editors, and reporters last year, including nearly $572,000 to its president and editor in chief, Paul Steiger, the press news site MediaBistro writes.
ProPublica, which shared a 2010 Pulitzer Prize with The New York Times for reporting on care at a New Orleans medical center in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, lost $2-million last year after posting a $2.4-million gain in 2008, according to tax filings submitted this week.
The organization paid $6.4-million in salary, benefits, and other compensation to 47 employees in all, up from $4-million in labor costs the previous year.
