Quiet Millionaire Leaves $50-Million to Pittsburgh Foundation

A chemical engineer who died last year after quietly accumulating millions of dollars through savvy investing and modest living left $50-million to the Pittsburgh Foundation, writes the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The bequest represented the bulk of Charles Kaufman’s fortune and is the largest donation ever to the foundation. He died in September at the age of 97 with no heirs.
The gift will be divided between a foundation Mr. Kaufman established in 2005 to allocate grants for scientific research to Pennsylvania organizations and a fund he set up in 1984 with his sister, who died in 2008, that supports various causes, including Jewish health care, land conservation, and a scholarship program for Pittsburgh students.
