Record $15-Million Gift to Revamp San Diego Zoo

March 29, 2011

A San Diego construction and property mogul has given the city’s famed zoo $15-million to transform portions of its big cat, koala, and Africa exhibits, reports The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The donation from Conrad Prebys is the largest ever to the San Diego Zoo and follows his $10.1-million gift in 2007 to remake its center for elephant care and its polar bear plunge, which is named for Mr. Prebys.

The Indiana native, who moved to San Diego in 1965, has become a major local donor in recent years, focusing on the arts and health care along with the zoo.
