San Francisco Archdiocese Turns to Court in Tax Fight

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco is suing the city over a $14.4-million tax bill assessed for the transfer of church properties, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The city, which is facing a $483-million budget deficit, says the archdiocese is liable for transfer taxes for shifting ownership of properties from one Catholic nonprofit organization to another.
In November San Francisco’s Transfer Tax Appeals Board ruled for the city, which is seeking a total of $21.7-million from the church, including penalties and interest.
