Simons Foundation Picks UC-Berkeley for $60-Million Computer Center

The University of California is set to announce Tuesday a $60-million grant from the Simons Foundation to establish an ambitious computer-science center at its Berkeley campus, according to The New York Times.
The Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at UC Berkeley will help researchers analyze vast sets of data to attack problems in health care, genetics, economics, and other areas. The center is set to open later this year and become fully functional in 2013.
The Simons Foundation is headed by mathematician and hedge-fund billionaire James H. Simons, who earned a doctorate at Berkeley. Late last year he donated $150-million, mostly for medical research, to the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he formerly worked as a math professor.
