Some Haitian Farmers Hurt by Foreign Aid

While foreign aid has poured into Haiti since the earthquake, an unintended consequence of the assistance has become apparent: Foreign food aid has been a blow to Haitian towns and villages whose residents earn their living by growing and selling rice, Haiti’s staple food, National Public Radio says.

For example, L’Artibonite, a Haitian town two hours north of Port-au-Prince that was not damaged by the earthquake, has been struggling ever since the foreign food starting coming in, since many Haitians can now get rice for free, causing the price to fall far below normal standards, the news network reports.
