U.K. Man Guilty of Stealing From Cancer Fund Set Up for Son

A British man was convicted Thursday of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from charities he established to fund treatment for his son and other children stricken with cancer, the BBC reports.

Kevin Wright, 49, of Staffordshire was found guilty on 12 theft and fraud counts. Prosecutors said he used nearly $267,000 raised for Bobby’s Fund and the Bobby Wright Cancer Fighting Fund to pay for his own “interests, investments, and personal lifestyle,” including an ownership stake in a pub.

Mr. Wright set up the charity operation to support care in America for his son, Bobby, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2005 at the age of 3. After Bobby recovered, without requiring the trip abroad, Mr. Wright mounted appeals for other ill children that took in hundreds of thousands of dollars more, including contributions from other charities, according to another BBC article.
