U.K. Nonprofit Employment Down Nearly 9% in Past Year

Britain’s charities have shed 70,000 jobs in the past year, a drop of 8.7 percent, with female workers bearing the brunt of the staff shrinkage, HR Magazine writes, citing new survey data on sector employment trends.
The nonprofit industry lost job at more than twice the rate of the public sector from the third quarter of 2010 to the same period last year, while private-sector employment rose slightly. Women accounted for 80 percent of the nonprofit job losses, and median gross pay in the sector fell by 3 percent to about $15.40 an hour.
The job figures provide “robust evidence that [U.K. government] spending cuts are hitting the voluntary sector disproportionately,” said Stuart Etherington, CEO of the National Council for Voluntary Organizations, one of three groups that conducted the survey.
