Universities in France Turn to Private Fund Raising

French universities have set up 39 foundations to channel private philanthropy into scholarships, research, and other programs, according to the International Herald Tribune.

The move into private fund raising marks a shift for the country’s colleges, which have long depending entirely on the state for financial support. A 2007 law gave French schools greater autonomy to seek donations from alumni and other donors.

The country’s 83 universities are expected to establish an additional 60 foundations in the coming months. Valerie Pecresse, France’s minister for higher education, said donors’ taxes will be reduced by 66 percent of the amount given by individuals and 60 percent by corporations.
