Update: Fla. Bars Fund Raising by Veterans Group

June 24, 2010 | Read Time: 1 minute

Florida has ordered a much-investigated Tampa veterans charity to stop fund raising in the state immediately, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

The order issued Tuesday by the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services alleges the U.S. Navy Veterans Association’s registration to solicit donations was obtained by “knowingly providing false or misleading information.”

We think consumers would be hurt if this group continues to be allowed to solicit funds,” a spokesman for the agency said.

Six other states have opened probes of the association since a March investigative report by the St. Petersburg Times sparked questions over the charity’s fund raising, leadership, and ties to a political-action committee headed by its former development director, Bobby Thompson.
