U.S. and U.K. Aid Groups Report Rapid Typhoon Haiyan Giving

Individual Americans gave more than $33-million for relief work in the Philippines in the week after the island nation was struck by Typhoon Haiyan, CNN Money says.

The American Red Cross said it had collected $11-million from U.S. donors as of Thursday morning, and the figure was expected to climb once contributions made via Facebook and iTunes were factored in. Unicef had taken in $4.7-million by Thursday, and World Vision said its tally at the end of Friday was $6-million.

In Britain, an appeal last week by the Disasters Emergency Committee, an alliance of 14 leading U.K.-based humanitarian groups, raised more than $48-million in its first three days, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The Philippines disaster could be a significant test of how deeply digital donating has taken root, particularly among “millennials,” who were born after 1982, who were a major driver of giving following the 2010 Haiti earthquake, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
