U.S. Resumes Gaza Aid as Hamas Retracts Audit Threat

Aid groups that work with the U.S. Agency for International Development in the Gaza Strip resumed operations Sunday after Hamas, which controls the Palestinian territory, backed off a demand to audit foreign charities, says Reuters.

Humanitarian agencies had stopped work Friday after Hamas closed the International Medical Corps’ Gaza operation because the charity refused to give the Islamist group confidential documents. The U.S. government had threatened to withhold nearly $100-million in Gaza aid over the dispute.

A new mechanism to review the aid groups’ operations is pending, a Hamas official said.
