Va. Investigates Charity of Couple Who Attended White House Dinner

Virginia officials have begun a formal probe of America’s Polo Cup, the annual fund-raising event staged by Michaele and Tareq Salahi to benefit their charitable foundation, The Washington Post reports.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said Thursday it was investigating “the fund-raising practices” of the charity polo match staged annually since 2007 as a benefit for the Journey for the Cure Foundation. The Salahis, who have been in the media spotlight since allegedly crashing last week’s White House state dinner, are listed in government filings as the sole executives of both the foundation and the Polo Cup.

Mr. Salahi told the Post last year that the 2007 event raised $250,000 for the charity, but state records indicate that the Virginia foundation reported receiving only $18,608 that year. It also failed to register with state regulators for four years, according to the article.
