Venue Fee a Hurdle for Health Charity’s Planned D.C. Clinic

A mobile medical charity that holds free health clinics for needy people nationwide is balking at plans for its Washington event because of the $77,000 price tag for the proposed venue, The Washington Post reports.

Remote Area Medical wants to hold a three-day event at the D.C. Armory in late January, but its founder, Stan Brock, said the fee sought by the Washington Convention and Sports Authority for the site is “prohibitively high” and far exceeds what other venues have charged.

The charity, which maintains headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn., has staged some 500 such events nationwide since 1985. In the past it has focused on remote and rural areas, but earlier this year it held its first urban free clinic in Los Angeles.
