Most fundraisers know that it’s easier to get people to give when they’re having fun. But for many nonprofits, especially those that focus on difficult-to-discuss issues like a disease or abuse, it’s hard to find ways to weave fun into the message.

“The advantage that nonprofits and charities have is that giving is a pleasure. It can be fun, but it’s not a given that it’s fun,” says Peter Sagal, the host of the popular NPR game show “Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” and of the forthcoming PBS documentary “Constitution USA.” “You need to find a way to let people access the joy of giving.”

Mr. Sagal, who says he has learned a lot about fundraising in his role at NPR, explains in the video below the best ways to tell powerful stories that connect with donors.
