Wash. Charities Received Bigger Share of Funds From Solicitors Last Year, State Officials Say

Charities that use professional solicitors in Washington state received 77 percent of the money raised on their behalf last year, compared with 58 percent in 2008, The Seattle Times reports, citing an accounting by state officials.
The annual review gave highest marks to Green Point Call Services, in New York, which returned 98 percent of funds to the Washington charities that hired them and Russ Reid Company, of Pasadena, Calif., which returned 97 percent.
About a quarter of the 107 paid solicitors operating in the state returned less than 20 percent of donations, and two charged more in fees than the amount they collected, according to the report by the Washington Secretary of State’s office.
