Knight Foundation Hires 2 Vice Presidents, for Journalism and DEI

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

Two new vice presidents have joined the $2.7 billion foundation.

Heidi Barker will be its new vice president for communications and chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer. She is a former NBC Network News producer who most recently served as vice president of corporate communications at Carnival Corporation.

Jim Brady, CEO of Spirited Media, has been named vice president for journalism.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Lisa Anastasi will become its chief development and public affairs officer on September 20. Most recently she was chief development and marketing officer at the United Service Organizations.

Barclays Private Bank

Juliet Agnew, who was previously managing director at the Utley Foundation, is joining the bank as its head of philanthropy, based in London. In this role, she will oversee its efforts to direct £2 billion ($2.8 billion) in donations to charities by 2025.

She succeeds Emma Turner, who is retiring after 12 years at Barclays.

Jewish Communal Fund

Teena Lerner has been appointed president of this group that oversees $2 billion in charitable assets for 4,200 donor-advised funds. She is a former investment manager on Wall Street who has served on the fund’s board since 2013.

She succeeds Zoya Raynes, who is leaving after four years.

ProPublica

Robin Sparkman, founding CEO of StoryCorps, has been appointed president and co-CEO of the nonprofit investigative-journalism group. When she begins her new role on September 8, she will serve alongside Stephen Engelberg, ProPublica’s editor in chief and co-CEO.

Sparkman will succeed Richard Tofel, who is retiring after eight years as president.

More New CEOs

Lindsay Baker, a senior fellow at the Rocky Mountain Institute who was previously global head of sustainability and impact at WeWork, has been named CEO of the International Living Future Institute.

Jamila Hodge will be the next executive director of Equal Justice USA. Most recently she was director of the Vera Institute of Justice’s Reshaping Prosecution Program.

James Johnson, a retired U.S. Air Force major general who most recently served as an adviser to the secretary of defense’s Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault in the Military, has been tapped as CEO of Operation Gratitude.

Sharon Moshavi, senior vice president of new initiatives at the International Center for Journalists, will be promoted to president on September 7. She will replace Joyce Barnathan, who is retiring after more than 15 years there.

Frederick Thomas, commander of the Scotlandville Substation with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana, has been named national president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

Molly Trerotola has been named head of social impact at ShoppingGives, an ecommerce platform that partners retail companies with nonprofit groups. Most recently she was vice president of social impact at Good Deeds.

Mubuso Zamchiya, managing director of the Luminos Fund, is now managing director of the Age of Learning Foundation, the charitable arm of the education-technology company Age of Learning.

Hartford Foundation for Public Giving

The $1.1 billion foundation in Connecticut has announced four new appointments.

Kelly Casey, a coordinator and evaluation specialist for the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, has been hired as senior learning and evaluation officer.

Joel Hicks-Rivera and Carmen Veloria have been named senior community impact officers. Hicks-Rivera was most recently director of the Hartford Working Cities program at United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. Veloria joins the foundation from Suffolk University in Boston where she was an associate professor of sociology and criminal justice and chair of its education department.

Cierra Stancil, program officer for grants at the American Savings Foundation, is now a community impact officer.

National Academy of Design

Three new senior leaders have joined the academy.

Thomas Moore III, director of individual giving at New York Road Runners, is now director of development.

Sara Reisman has been hired as chief curator and director of national academician affairs. She was previously the executive and artistic director of the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation.

Adrienne Elise Tarver has been appointed director of programs. Most recently she was the associate chair of fine arts at Savannah College of Art and Design, Atlanta.

SFJAZZ

The music organization in San Francisco has hired three new senior leaders.

Ahmad Anderson, founder and managing partner of Designing Effective Organizations, has been named director of people and culture.

Emma Moon, who was most recently vice president of development at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County, has been appointed director of development.

Parmila Phillips, managing director at Newport Advisors, is now its chief financial officer.

Other Notable Appointments

Ruth Bechtel, Mozambique country director at VillageReach, has been promoted to vice president of programs.

Leena Bhutta, deputy chief investment officer at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, will be promoted to chief investment officer on January 1, 2022. She will succeed Jeffrey Heil, who intends to retire in December after 18 years overseeing its $2.4 billion in assets.

Katharine Burgess, vice president for urban resilience at the Urban Land Institute, has been named vice president for land use and development at Smart Growth America.

Kristen Caloca, senior vice president at Mercury, has been hired as vice president of accounts at Cause Communications, a nonprofit communications firm. In addition, Christopher de Haan has been named marketing director. Previously he was senior vice president of marketing and communications at the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Lucy Chen has been named vice president of advocacy and community engagement at the Cathedral Arts Project. Most recently she was head of music programs at the Count Basie Center for the Arts and director of its Monmouth Conservatory for Music.

Cristina Lopez has been promoted to chief of strategy and operations at the Last Mile Education Fund. She has been a strategy consultant at the fund since March.

Tamara Hoff Pope has been promoted from managing director of college success to vice president of programs at Chicago Scholars.

Carla Smith has been promoted from chief program officer to deputy chief executive officer at the Urban Resource Institute. Amanda Eckhardt, executive director of Restore NYC, will succeed her as chief program officer.

Laura Wallenstein, senior philanthropic adviser at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is joining Lymphoma Research Foundation as its chief philanthropy officer.

Ty Woodfolk, director of human resources, diversity, and inclusion at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, is joining the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation as its first chief culture and inclusion officer, effective September 7. He will follow Trish Jeffers, interim director of human resources, who will become deputy director of human resources. She was previously human resources director at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Carey Anne Zucca, senior executive director of development and alumni affairs at University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering, has been named vice president for advancement at Skidmore College.

Departure

Arturo Jacobus, who has served as president and CEO of the Atlanta Ballet since 2009, is retiring.

Legacies

Janice Mirikitani, co-founder and founding president of Glide, died on July 29 at age 80. Along with other Japanese-Americans, she and her family were incarcerated in an internment camp in Rohwer, Ark., during World War II. She went on to create this social-justice group that provides programs to offer education, recovery support, primary and mental-health care, job training, and housing for San Francisco’s poor and marginalized communities.

Thomas Payzant, former board chair at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, died on July 25 at age 80. He spent his career as an educator and school superintendent, and also served as assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education in former President Bill Clinton’s administration.
