Zoom Hires Head of Social Impact for Its New Philanthropic Arm

Roxana Shirkhoda, director of special initiatives at Tides, has been named head of social impact at the philanthropic arm of Zoom Video Communications, the company that makes software for virtual meeting spaces.

Amnesty International USA

Paul O’Brien will become executive director on April 15. He joins the human-rights organization after 14 years at Oxfam America, where he was most recently vice president for policy and advocacy.

McKnight Foundation

Tenzin Dolkar will next serve as a program officer of the foundation’s Midwest Climate and Energy program. She was most recently a climate adviser to the City of Minneapolis for the Natural Resources Defense Council’s partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies American Cities Climate Challenge.

Earl Buford, CEO of Partner4Work, a work-force development organization in Pittsburgh, has been named president of the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning.

Andrew Rodgers, executive director of the Denver Film Society, has been appointed executive director and CEO of the Albuquerque Museum Foundation.

Alliance for Safety and Justice

Lenore Anderson, co-founder and president, will now also serve as CEO as the group’s other co-founder, Robert Rooks, steps down.

The criminal-justice organization has announced several other leadership promotions.

Shakyra Diaz, managing director of partnerships, is now chief of staff.

Shaena Fazal, director of legislative advocacy, has been promoted to managing director of advocacy.

Tinisch Hollins has been named executive director of its Californians for Safety and Justice program. Most recently she was associate director of that program and California state director of its Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice program.

Jay Jordan, who was previously executive director of the Californians for Safety and Justice program, is now vice president and national director of #TimeDone.

Aswad Thomas has been tapped as chief of organizing and national director of Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice.

Mark Arstein, senior executive director of advancement at the University of Utah’s U Health Huntsman Mental Health Institute, has been tapped as vice president for institutional advancement at Utah Valley University.

Kimberly Blair, assistant vice president of advancement for Roanoke at Virginia Tech, has been appointed vice president for resource development at Roanoke College.

Maria Clark has joined GoodUnited as executive vice president of partnerships and chief evangelist. Previously she was national senior vice president of peer-to-peer development at the American Cancer Society.

Jonathan Guir, development operations and prospect research manager at the Italian Home for Children, has joined the Boston Arts Academy Foundation as its director of operations and research.

Joseph Hunter, assistant vice chancellor for development at Vanderbilt University, has been hired as vice president for university advancement at Linfield University.

Omer Imtiazuddin has been appointed managing director of FINCA Ventures, the impact investing arm of FINCA International. Most recently he was a senior adviser for innovative finance at the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Vandana Ingle, program officer at the Mat-Su Foundation, was promoted to senior program officer, overseeing its Healthy Futures program.

Juan McGruder, senior vice president and chief development officer at Junior Achievement of Georgia, has been named vice president for advancement at Oglethorpe University.

Kim Schultz, executive director of the Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee, has been named director of corporate and foundation relations at the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Hyemi Sevening will be the next associate dean of institutional advancement in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She most recently was assistant dean of advancement at the University of California at Davis’s School of Veterinary Medicine.

Lisa Urias, managing partner at her marketing firm, Urias Communications, has been named chief program and community-engagement officer at the Arizona Community Foundation. She succeeds Elisa de la Vara, who is retiring.

Peter Wilch, vice president for development at the University of San Francisco, has been appointed senior vice president for university advancement at Loyola Marymount University.

Legacies

Joseph Duffey, who was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to serve as chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1977 until 1981, died on February 25.

Frank Shankwitz, co-founder and former leader of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, died on January 24 of esophageal cancer. He was 77. In 1980, Shankwitz was a police officer in Arizona when he helped a 7-year-old with leukemia live out his dream of being an honorary Highway Patrol motorcycle officer for a day. The boy died a few days later, leading Shankwitz to co-found the group with his wife and friends. He served as its first president and CEO.

Shelia Washington, who founded the Scottsboro Boys Museum and Cultural Center, died January 29 of a heart attack at age 61. She created the nonprofit group in honor of nine Black teenagers who were falsely accused and convicted of rape and assault in Alabama in the 1930s. She made it her life’s work to clear their names and secure posthumous pardons for them.
