Even veteran fundraisers can benefit from a review of the basics.

Charitable organizations must make sure they register with the applicable state charity office before soliciting donations. And in their solicitations, fundraisers must accurately represent how donations will be used.

Tracy Boak, a lawyer with the firm Perlman & Perlman who specializes in nonprofit law and fundraising regulations, produced a checklist with these reminders and others to help nonprofits adhere to state and federal laws when seeking charitable contributions.
