Every dinner, gala, or other gathering your organization hosts is a chance to make guests feel something. Yet planning often begins with logistics: the venue, the program, the fundraising goals. Organizations that turn events into gifts take a different approach.

Creating a meaningful experience separates a pleasant occasion from one that inspires people to give or get involved. It requires thinking about what memories a guest will carry with them after the event ends.

Put yourself in your donors’ shoes, says Steve Isom, chief operating and financial officer at Bloomerang. The organizations seeing the strongest returns stay focused on the attendee, he says: “What do you want them to feel before the event? What do you want them to feel during the event? And what do you want them to feel after?”

Here is a collection of expert advice to help you design experiences that deepen connections with supporters and inspire giving — from intimate events that win big gifts to galas built around atmosphere, plus ways to welcome the next generation of donors.
